The Origins of the Seven Dwarfs
The fairy tale Snow White was originally written by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812. Dwarfs were included in the original story, but none of them had names.
A century later, the Broadway version of Snow White was produced, in which the dwarfs were given the names of Blick, Flick, Glick, Snick, Plick, Whick, and Quee.
When Walt Disney produced Snow White in 1937, it was Disney’s first animated movie. Disney wanted the dwarfs to play a major role in the movie, knowing that their personalities would be what would draw in the audience.
As such, each dwarf was given a name that correlated with his personality. Some of the original contenders were Gabby, Lazy, Wheezy, Nifty, and Shorty.
However, eventually the seven dwarfs were given their official names: Doc, Bashful, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy, and Dopey.
Personalities of the Seven Dwarfs
Let’s take a brief look at each of these beloved characters.
1. Doc
Doc is the leader of the seven dwarfs, and although he can be a little bossy, he is kind-hearted.
He can be weak under pressure and a bit absent-minded at times, getting easily flustered. However, he is intelligent, reliable, and lovable.
When introducing Doc, Walt Disney described him this way, “This pompous-looking individual is Doc—the self-appointed leader of the group.”
Roy Atwell was the voice of Doc in the film.
2. Bashful
Bashful is the romantic of the group, always coy and frequently hiding behind his beard.
He has a crush on Snow White, but doesn’t like to be the center of attention and can often be found blushing.
When introducing Bashful, Walt Disney reportedly described him this way, “This little fellow is Bashful—he’s secretly in love with Snow White.”
Scotty Mattraw was the voice of Bashful in the movie.
3. Grumpy
As you might guess, Grumpy is often quite grouchy and tends to have a short fuse.
Deep down, he has a good heart, but Grumpy is frequently seen with a grimace on his face and his arms crossed over his chest.
Interestingly, Grumpy was voiced by Pinto Colvig, who also voiced Goofy.
When introducing Grumpy, Walt Disney reportedly described him this way, “And old sourpuss here is Grumpy, the woman hater.”
However, we know deep down he had a soft spot for Snow White, as he led the charge for her rescue.
4. Happy
Happy is the most cheerful and jovial of the bunch, always smiling and looking to have a good time.
He has a bubbly, outgoing personality and loves to dance and have parties.
When introducing Happy, Walt Disney reportedly described him this way, “And [this is] Happy here, with the beaming smile.”
Otis Harlan was the voice actor for Happy in the movie.
5. Sleepy
Sleepy is the heavy-lidded dwarf in the group, always tired and yawning.
He’s more laid-back than the rest of the bunch, often ignoring what’s going on around him and opting for a nap instead.
When introducing Sleepy, Walt Disney reportedly described him this way, “And ol’ droopy-eyes is called Sleepy.”
Sterling Holloway, the voice of Winnie the Pooh, voiced Sleepy in the movie.
6. Sneezy
Sneezy is the allergy-riddled dwarf in the group, with a persistent stuffy nose and uncontrollable fits of sneezing.
He’s very friendly and the other dwarfs are quick to help him attempt to control his sneezes.
When introducing Sneezy, Walt Disney reportedly described him this way, “This funny face is Sneezy—he has hay fever.”
Billy Gilbert was the voice actor for Sneezy in the film.
7. Dopey
Dopey is the youngest dwarf, and the only one who doesn’t speak. He’s also the only dwarf without a beard!
He is the most well-loved dwarf because of his silly shenanigans and oversized clothes.
When introducing Dopey to Snow White, Happy described him this way, “This is Dopey; he don’t talk none!”
The other dwarfs are sometimes annoyed by Dopey’s antics, but that hasn’t stopped him from becoming the most popular dwarf!
Although Dopey doesn’t speak, he has some vocal sound effects that were performed by Mel Blanc, of Bugs Bunny fame.
