TOPEKA POLICE DEPARTMENTa week agoAgencyOfficer-involved shooting investigation - April 20, 2024 A suspect alleged to have been involved in an armed robbery has been transported by ambulance to a local hospital, following an officer-involved shooting, Saturday afternoon in Topeka. On April 20, 2024, just before 2 p.m., officers from the Topeka Police Department (TPD) responded to a citizen report of an armed robbery in the 2700 block of SE California Ave., where a vehicle was taken by force. The suspect was alleged to have been armed with a firearm and was acting erratically. During the investigation, officers received additional citizen calls with information of suspect sightings. With the assistance of multiple citizens, the responding officers were able to locate the suspect in central Topeka. TPD officers located and attempted to make contact with the suspect, who fled on foot. At approximately 3:30 p.m., in the 500 block of SW 16th Street, the suspect fired a weapon at the pursuing officers causing the officers to return fire, in self-defense. The suspect was transported to a local hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries. No TPD Officers, nor other citizens, were injured in this incident. TPD requested the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) to investigate this incident. Per policy, the involved TPD officers have been placed on administrative leave while the incident is under investigation. Moving forward, the KBI will be the lead agency on this investigation.
